Bir geminin ge\u00e7i\u015finde 200 milyon ton tatl\u0131 suyun harcand\u0131\u011f\u0131 sistemde gemiler farkl\u0131 seviyelerdeki g\u00f6llerden olu\u015fan kanaldan ge\u00e7erken su seviyesini dengeleyerek kanal\u0131n y\u00fckseklik farklar\u0131n\u0131 e\u015fitler. Bu sayede bir gemi Pasifik Okyanusu&#8217;ndan kanala giri\u015f yapt\u0131\u011f\u0131nda \u00f6nce Miraflores ve Pedro Miguel kilitleri aras\u0131ndaki b\u00f6l\u00fcmleri ge\u00e7er, ard\u0131ndan Gatun G\u00f6l\u00fc&#8217;ne ula\u015f\u0131r.
